TIMELINE & HISTORY OF THE SILICONE WRISTBAND

Silicone wristbands, also known as silicone bracelets or rubber bracelets, were first introduced in the early 2000s and quickly became popular fashion accessories, especially among young people.

2004-06

2004: Lance Armstrong, the famous cyclist and cancer survivor, launched the Livestrong wristband campaign to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. The bright yellow wristbands, made of silicone rubber, became an instant hit and sold millions worldwide.

2005: Other charitable organizations and causes started using silicone wristbands as a way to promote their causes and raise funds. For example, Make Poverty History wristbands were sold to support the campaign against global poverty and debt.

2006: Customized silicone wristbands started to gain popularity as a way to promote brands, events, and sports teams. Companies began to use them as a promotional item to give away at trade shows, conferences, and events.

2007-15

2007: The use of silicone wristbands extended to political campaigns, with candidates and parties using them to promote their messages and raise funds.

2008: Silicone wristbands started to incorporate more sophisticated designs, including embossed or debossed text and logos, and multi-color patterns. The use of glow-in-the-dark and UV-reactive silicone also became popular.

Note:  Most recently silicone wristbands where even used during the pandemic for contact tracing. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, silicone wristbands have been used as a tool for contact tracing. The wristbands are used to track people's movements and interactions in public spaces, helping health officials to identify potential COVID-19 exposure.
