THE ROUGE’S REDDENING TREND

During the 1930s Lipstick sales rose, a series of psychology experiments have confirmed for the first time that while tougher economic times decrease desire for most items, they also reliably increase women’s yearning for products that boost their attractiveness to men even as many people fell into hard economic times. This phenomenon became known as the lipstick effect.

In the Roman Empire, both men and women wore lipstick as a display of wealth; only upper classes could afford lip paint made with (dangerous) mercury that came in fashionable shades of merlot and purple.

A University of Manchester study found that a woman wearing red lipstick capture’s a man’s gaze over three times longer than one who is wearing no lipstick at all.

When religious leaders who thought cosmetics is sinful held a lot of sway, lipsticks were out.  When influential style icons, usually royalty, decided that they wanted to wear lipstick, lipstick came back in.
